| Middle school science teacher, Tara Kane, is breaking down the classroom walls and expanding thinking into student homes as she flips her classroom. Lessons like this one, on Metric Conversions, are to watched at home for homework. Then, the following day, Mrs. Kane allows her students to practice the concept while she is available to give one-on-one help and guidance. While she doesn't flip all of her lessons, a concept like this one lends itself perfectly to this model of classroom practice. The homework assignment, which involves watching the supplementary video is usually accompanied by note-taking. In class the following day, students have the opportunity to, "watch the video again as a refresher, if [the students] wish," Kane explains. Mrs. Kane went on to tell me that some of her videos are found on educational websites and others she creates herself. This one was created on her own in SMART Notebook, recording the screen with QuickTime and was posted on YouTube.com. |
