Language Arts teacher, Chuck Kovacs, shed light and some interesting perspectives on the popular 1954 novel, Lord of the Flies, by inviting two of his colleagues to co-teach lessons about the book. This read, made famous by it's underlying tones of brutality and pessimism can spark interesting discussion about the fundamentals of human nature. Kovacs invited the Andy Yeager, the school's Student Assistance Counselor, into the class to discuss bullying topics. Yeager highlighted specific details and events in the book and related them to statistics about by why teens bully and what factors contribute to bullying situations. Furthermore, Kelly Epstein, psychology teacher joined the class to give a neurological perspective on some of the fictitious boys' actions in the story. Students were encouraged to ask questions as this trio wove the accounts of Coral Island through the human brain and compared it to today's society. #collaboration #coteaching #interdisciplinary #languagearts |
